Creating Your Own Postcard
Whether you’re a business owner or graphic designer looking to create compelling postcards, the first step is to determine what are the dimensions you will be working with. We have provided you with postcard dimensions, business cards dimensions and Tri-fold brochure dimensions.
We recommend using a program such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator to create a professional looking business card or by using whatever software tools you have on your computer. For the best printing results, any images used must be at least 350 DPI (dots per inch), also known as Pixels Per Inch (PPI) at the final output size.
Postcard Dimensions Size and Setup
The standard dimensions for a printed business card are 6 x 4 inches. That’s the finished card size. With using bleeds use 6 x 4 inches. The “bleed area” is an extra 1/8 inch of space for design elements or backgrounds that extend beyond the finished size of your piece.
A postcard design with bleed is printed slightly over-sized and then cut down to the correct size, giving the appearance that the printing “bleeds” off the edge of the business card, rather than having white borders on the edge.
Postcard Design Tips
Make the document page size equal to the card size plus the bleed area, or 6.1″ wide x 4.1″ high, to be trimmed down to the finished size after printing. If you aren’t planning to include bleeds, the bleed area isn’t necessary, so set the document size to the finished size, 6.1 x 4.1 inches.
Careful near the Borders
Because the cutting process may vary, it’s a good idea to keep all of your text and logo information within the safe design zone. This safe zone is the 1/8-inch area around the margin of your card. Make sure your text is within the 6 x 4 inch area of your postcard. You wouldn’t want to have the last digit of your contact information cut off!
Using double-sided postcards is a good idea when you need more space to work with or would like to provide extra information about your company or products. Create a separate page in your file for the backside, keeping each page with the size specifications above.
